In the UK and Europe we’re often teased with American confectionaries appearing in movies and the general media that are not available in the region. But now you can obtain the exclusive tastes of the USA anywhere in Europe without even having to leave the house, thanks to AmericanSoda.co.uk.
AmericanSoda.co.uk is a website that offers American drinks, candy, chocolate, grocery food items, baking and even non food items. For the purpose of our review we selected a wide range of products offered as seen within our photo. The website currently has an upbeat Christmas theme, but the general user interface is the same all year round. It’s easy to use, clean and visually pleasing. It’s like an American Dina online. The service uses UK Mail for next day delivery and My Hermes as standard 3-5 day delivery.
Delivery & Packaging
The folks over at American Soda make sure glass bottles and fragile items are well packaged so they don’t break or receive damaging impact in transit. All our items arrived in pristine condition, not one dent, rip or breakage in site.
What We Got
From the selection of products we received we definitively experienced some new sensations on our tongues which we've never discovered from anything sampled for sale in the UK or Europe. We had eleven American food and drink items which were the Sioux City Birch Beer, Jelly Belly Crushed Pineapple Soda, Brach's Candy Corn, Junior Mints, Hershey's Chocolate Syrup, Snickers 3 x Chocolate, Hershey's 5th Avenue Bar, Kellogg's Pop Tarts Frosted S'mores, Kellogg's Pop Tarts Frosted Brown Sugar Cinnamon, Hershey's Cookies 'n' Creme Giant Bar and Raspberry Marshmallow Fluff.
Highlighting some of our favourites: the Sioux City Birch Beer was very controversial at the studio, some loved its flavour and others couldn't bring themselves to take a second sip. Judging by the bottle design alone you may think this stumbled out of a Clint Eastwood movie, but no, this was bottled this year and is a popular variant of Birch Beer within the USA. The flavour is very reminiscent of root beer, but with a slightly more prominent herby taste. This flavour is very unique and you definitely either love it or hate it.
Hershey's Chocolate Bars
The Hershey's 5th Avenue Chocolate Bar doesn't give any clues in its name to what its flavour is. This bar has a crunchy peanut centre covered in Hershey's milk chocolate. The crunchy flakey peanut concoction is scrumptious, nothing like a Snickers or any other mainstream peanut based chocolate bar we've ever had in Europe. The Hershey's milk chocolate, however, isn't anything like the milky succulent type we have in Europe; it's a bit waxy and bland, but coupled with the crunchy peanut centre it was redeemed. On the other hand, a great version of Hershey's chocolate is the delightful Hershey's Cookies 'n' Cream bar. This consists of a white chocolate with a very generous serving of cookie pieces throughout, and is deliciously rich and creamy.
Marshmallow Fluff & Pop Tarts
We can purchase the regular Marshmallow Fluff imported from the USA in some supermarkets in the UK, but the raspberry flavour is not for sale, so we we pleased to find this in the American Soda store. This is vegetarian and does have a wonderful gooey marshmallow texture. Spread on bread, croissants, plain doughnuts and even served with ice cream, it is simply irresistible. The raspberry flavour is artificial and therefore tastes more like the taste of raspberry you'd find in sweets, but nevertheless its gooey, fruity sweetness is hard to resist. Another product that is available within the UK are Kellogg's Pop Tarts, but the flavours are limited here. The Frosted S'mores flavour from American Soda replicated the classic camp fire s'mores perfectly and the gooey chocolate wrapped in the pocket of pastry, with a lining of icing, is heavenly. The other flavour we tried was the Brown Sugar Cinnamon, these two ingredients served in a hot pastry make a seasonly delicious way to warm up in these cold winter mornings.
From the wide selection of items we sampled AmericanSoda.co.uk is truly full of curious novelties and this is definitely the service to check out within the UK and Europe to experience an authentic bite of the USA this Christmas.
