Welly Merck Classic Zurich Watch Review

New minimalist watch designs are showering down on us faster than we can keep up. Don’t get us wrong, we like these dainty creations that pair with broad styles of fashion, but ironically there's not enough time to keep track of them all. However, we we feel this one stands out amongst the crowded choices to some degree due its to prominent styling and straightforward choices. It’s made by Welly Merck and this model is the $258 Classic Zurich timepiece presented in decadent packaging and is an ideal consideration for Valentines Day.

Design

It’s both sophisticated, with its 42mm rose gold case, and understated, in the 6mm flat design approach taken. If it were any chunkier or more flamboyant in the detailing, it would be airing on the side of gaudy. So we’re thankful Welly Merck have resolved the design in the manner they have done. The swish black (also available in white) 38mm watch face with rose gold hands and time indications are the epitome of the overall dainty and literally glowing appearance. We would have to say that its quality of construction is exemplary. The case feels solid and strong - plus it’s 3 ATM water resistant. The sapphire crystal glass has resisted scratches and remains a dazzling spectacle, and that mesh strap exudes luxury but doesn't weaken with use. In fact, the straps are interchangeable, so if you fancy a fresh or a different style of comfort on your wrist you can do so easily.

Comfort

Now we should point out that Welly Merck supplied a fabric NATO and leather strap as well as the matching rose gold stainless Zurich mesh strap. Our standout favourite for appearance would have to be the Zurich; whilst more abrasive against the wrist than the alternative, it’s generally a comfortable wear and is designed to contour and not pinch the wrist in any way. The other fabric NATO and leather straps benefit from a softer wearability but also they’re easier to put on the wrist via a buckle. The Welly Merck Zurich strap, on the other hand, requires a little bit of a fiddle to equip and could potentially be a two person affair for some. The benefit of its snap-lock mechanism is that it’s clean to look at and fully adjustable in fit, but we think a magnetic based idea could be easier to use.

Telling the Time

Being able to actually read the time on your watch is always a plus. Welly Merck have actually preserved legibility of the lines to reference numbers and hands remarkably well. Light bounces off the rose gold detailing on the watch face so that a glance is all that’s needed to tell the time in even dull lighting. A Swiss Ronda 762 movement, using a sapphire crystal, keeps the time in check and we have no concerns about the accuracy, etc.

Verdict

The Welly Merck Classic Zurich is an understated and twinkly watch that keeps things simple by just telling the time in a very straightforward yet sophisticated fashion. It’s also the thinnest timepiece of this style we’ve yet to see.
